Mansoor Khan adapted Romeo and Juliet successfully in 1988 with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. More recently Habib Faisal did it with Ishaqzaade (2012), setting it in more contemporary times. Director-writer Sanjay Leela Bhansali takes the same basic idea of two lovers from opposite faction and imbues it with a magical outburst of colours and imagery that is so unique to director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He does it with flourish and excels in what he set out to do, making Ram-Leela a memorable adaptation of the Bard's most celebrated work after Hamlet.
Welcome to a vibrantly colourful Gujarati small town, where everything is picture-postcard pretty, at least visually. Ram (Ranveer Singh) and Leela (Deepika Padukone belong to warring clan groups Rajadi and Sanada. And, we are told they have been at loggerheads for 500 years. Yet Rajadi Ram and Leela from Sanada group cannot help falling in love with each other. Wait a sec, was it love or was it lust at first sight on the day when the entire town is playing Holi?

In the same small town guns and bullets are available and sold as if it is the key crop of the regions besides the dried red, chillies which you see spread in the courtyard of the matriarch Baa (Supriya Pathak), Leela's mother. Since we already know the story is based on Romeo and Juliet there is little you expect to surprise you. However Bhansali intermittently weaves along tiny twists and turns that have you gasping.
The director's attention to detail is awe-inspiring. A candle, a lamp, a chandelier, curtains, wall paint, the lighting everything is perfectly arranged in a way to take your breath away by its beauty. Every action, every movement, even by a supporting character looks painstakingly choreographed. The writing though not perfect is strong enough to give its principal characters enough to shine in turns. Everyone gets a line or two or a moment to display their strength.
Of the cast Surpiya Pathak towers above all with her Godmotherish, mean streak which is all pervading on the Sanada group. Contrast this to a weak figurehead from the Rajadi group. In a small role Richa Chadda proves that she knows how to sink her teeth into a part even if it is not as meaty like the one she portrayed in Gangs of Wasseypur.
The film and the viewer get its biggest adrenaline rush from the strong, pulsating chemistry that the lead pair Deepika and Ranveer unfold from the time they meet till the climax of the film. You can feel it even when Ranveer is sitting on the couch with Baa while Deepika is doing the garba during the Navratri celebrations.
The director's treatment of the subject is outstanding. It's interesting how there is always looming large a certain destructive, violent streak in the narrative even when it is a romantic scene at play. You get a sense of a doomed love affair waiting to happen. Monty Sharma's background scorer aids the dramatic tension in the story.
The music, borrowing from folk elements in Gujarat, though not of the variety which can be hummed by one and all is dazzling in the context of the film. The songs are extremely well-choreographed except for Priyanka Chopra's items number, which seem run-of-the-mill.
At a run time of two-hours-forty minutes Ram-Leela could get a bit laborious but you can surpass that because Bhansali comes forth with a love story that is enthralling, sparkling and compelling but not self-indulgent like Saawariya (2007).
